Fresh Performance: Xavier Worthy
Texas true freshman, Xavier Wothy has seen his role increase each week this season. With the Longhorns kicking off their Big 12 schedule, the offense put on a show against Texas Tech. Worthy was a big part of that as he continued his upward trend and made several big plays during Texas’ 70 – 35 win over Texas Tech.
Worthy was a key player in Texas’ offense explosion on Saturday. He showed he is already well on his way to being a savvy receiver, doing a good job of creating space and navigating the sideline and back of the end-zone on his first two touchdowns. He ran a good corner route and found a pocket in the defense near the front pylon to make his first touchdown catch of the game. On his second score, he ran a stutter and go to freeze the defender and made a leaping catch in the back of the end-zone. Both plays demonstrated Worthy’s quick feet and good ball skills.
On his third score of the game Worthy showed his big play ability. He ran an intermediate crossing route and caught the ball over the middle of the field. Worthy then spun out of a tackle, cut back toward the left side of the field and accelerated away from the defense for a 62 yard touchdown. Worthy displayed his toughness, balance and big play speed on the play proving he can be a home-run threat for the Longhorns.
Xavier Worthy demonstrated why he was considered such an explosive recruit and that his transfer into Steve Sarkisian’s offense was the right move. On Saturday, he made 5 catches for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns. Worthy is not only a big play threat, but is also proving to be a crafty receiver who gets open in a variety of ways and catches the ball well. His continued emergence over the course of the season will help the Texas offense score plenty of points in 2021.
