Size
Tony Mitchell has good height at safety and has the frame to add good weight as he matures. He has a good build that suits a deep safety or a cover guy in the slot. Mitchell has the height to match-up with most receivers and tight ends. He will be able to add weight and strength while maintaining his mobility.
Athleticism
Mitchell is a good all around athlete, who looks smooth and effortless in the secondary. He makes smooth transitions, changing directions well in coverage. Mitchell has good top end speed and some explosiveness to go with it. His agility stands out but Mitchell is a good athlete in other areas as well.
Coverage Skills
Mitchell has good hips and can play in man coverage when needed. He mirrors receivers well and has the length to make plays in coverage. Mitchell also displays good coverage instincts when playing off the ball, reacting well to the play and arriving in time to make a play. He has the ability to excel in multiple coverage schemes and roles in the secondary.
Ball Skills
Mitchell has the length and instincts to make plays on the ball. He shows the quick reaction time and hands needed to come up with interceptions. He reads his keys well, putting himself in good position to make a play, which also makes him less likely to get tested. Mitchell has the tools and instincts to make a play on the ball in coverage.
Run Support / Tackling
Mitchell’s instincts carry over against the running game well, he recognizes run quickly and closes on the ball. He is a willing hitter who does not hesitate in run support, he does need to be consistent with his form when tackling but gets the job done. Mitchell’s read and react ability helps him create good angles to the ball carrier.
Projection
Tony Mitchell is a safety with excellent coverage skills. He has scheme versatility with the ability to play in man and zone coverage effectively. Mitchell has the size, length and coverage ability needed to become an all conference type performer in college.
