Week Six Stars, 2022

Every week is a new opportunity for college football players to shine. Here’s a look at a few of the stars from week six:

WR – Quentin JohnstonTCU

TCU and Kansas came into Saturday’s game undefeated and played an entertaining 38 – 31 game that came down to the wire. It was Horned Frogs’ star receiver Quentin Johnston who came through with a 24 yard touchdown catch to win the game with 1:36 left to play. Johnston had a quiet first four games of the season, but made up for the slow start with a tremendous performance against the Jayhawks. He more than doubled his season production, coming up with big catches throughout the game to keep TCU’s offense rolling. For the game, Johnston had 14 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown. TCU had been waiting for a performance like this from their talented receiver, he delivered in the season’s biggest game to date.

OLB – Byron Young – Tennessee

Tennessee‘s explosive offense gets most of the recognition and rightfully so, but the defense has been very good and had another strong performance against LSU. The Volunteers dominated all around in a 40 – 17 win, including a strong performance by Byron Young. The pass rushing outside linebacker was consistently in the Tigers’ backfield pressuring Jayden Daniels relentlessly. He was credited with 5 tackles and 2.5 sacks, including a sack on fourth down that set up Tennessee’s field-goal to end the first half. Young had a big game for a Tennessee defense that has been playing at a high level this season.

Tennessee Volunteers Gear
RB – Zach Charbonnet – UCLA

UCLA followed up their big win over Washington with a 42 – 32 win against Utah. Star running back, Zach Charbonnet was able to control the game for the Bruins, ripping off long runs where he showed good speed and plenty of power. He chewed up yardage between the 20s, setting up the Bruins offense for scores. He showed some wiggle and explosiveness, but it was the punishing way he finished runs that stood out. He powered through the Utah defense and wore them down over the course of the game. Charbonnet finished the day with 22 carries for 198 yards and a touchdown. He carried the load for the Bruins offense en route to a big division win.

TE – Michael MayerNotre Dame

Notre Dame won their third game in a row, 28 – 20 over BYU. Michael Mayer is a mismatch for most defenses and proved to be just that against BYU. He dominated the game for Notre Dame’s offense, making play after play against the BYU defense. Mayer was too big, too strong and too good of an athlete for BYU to keep contained. He tallied 11 catches for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also doing an excellent job of run blocking for a strong performance by the running attack. Mayer is an elite tight end, Saturday he reminded the country how dominant he can be.

North Carolina State’s Defense

North Carolina State was in danger of losing their second straight game on Saturday. The Wolfpack trailed 17 – 3 at the half, but their defense had an incredible second half performance to lead the team to a 19 – 17 win over Florida State. Not only did they shutout the Florida State offense, they set their own offense up with great field position to help them score. When starting quarterback Devin Leary was lost to injury, his replacement did not complete a pass, but the Wolfpack were able to score nine points thanks to their defense setting them up with great field position. They held Florida State to 93 yards of offense in the second half and came up with two key interceptions, including one in their own end-zone to seal the win. The Wolfpack’s defense was at another level in the second half Saturday night, leading the team to a big win.
