Size
Cormani McClain has the height and length to be an elite college cornerback. He is still on the thin side, but has the frame to add good weight. McClain is physical for his size and that physicality will only increase as he fills out. He has the size and frame to match-up with just about any receiver one on one.
Athleticism
McClain has great speed and acceleration for a player with his length. He has the explosiveness to get out of his back pedal and close on the ball. McClain may have a longer stride, but his hips are fluid and allow him to transition well in coverage. With good change of direction ability and great linear speed there is little he cannot do athletically.
Hips/Technique
McClain uses his length well in press man coverage and can turn and run with receivers down field fluidly. He also does a good job of coming out of his back pedal in off coverage and closing on passes in front of him. McClain relies more on his athleticism than technique at this time, but will only get better as he refines his technique. He has good makeup speed, closing when receivers appear to be open and making a play.
Ball Skills
McClain displays excellent ball skills when making a play. It’s easily apparent that he has experience playing receiver when he tracks the ball and times his leaps. McClain shows the ability to adjust to the ball and secure the catch. He anticipates the play and finds the ball quickly, showing soft hands when making interceptions. His leaping ability and timing make him a tough match-up in contested situations.
Physicality/Tackling
McClain may have a slender build right now, but he plays the game with a physical attitude. He is physical in coverage, disrupting receivers off the ball and competing on contested throws. McClain is a willing hitter against the run as well, showing the ability to come down and deliver a hit. He will need to get stronger in college to be as effective in these areas, but he has the attitude needed.
Projection
Cormani McClain has all of the tools needed to be a star cornerback. He has a rare blend of size and athleticism with the ball skills and instincts to take advantage of those physical gifts. McClain has the tools and ball skills to be an impact player that will develop into one of the best cornerbacks in college football.
