Derek Williams: Scouting Report

Pos: Safety
Team: Texas
Class: 2023
Size

Derek Williams is a tall, rangy defender who has the height and frame to be an imposing figure in the secondary. He has good length with plenty of room to continue to fill out. Williams already plays big and has the potential to add a lot of good weight. He is able to play multiple spots, with the size to play closer to the line of scrimmage or in the box.

Athleticism

Williams shows good speed and burst in the defensive backfield. He closes well on plays in front of him and has the speed to make plays in pursuit. Williams has good change of direction for a player with his size. He is a good overall athlete at safety who can move as well as smaller players at the position.

Coverage Skills

Williams’ size and range help him cover ground in the secondary. He is able to break on the ball well and make plays on underneath routes. Williams has the size to match-up well with tight ends and bigger receivers in the slot helping his team against potential mismatches. His ability to read and react makes him a play-making safety in coverage.

Ball Skills

Williams has the long arms to break up passes in coverage. His read and react ability helps him to recognize the play, then he has the size and length to disrupt the play. He does not have many interceptions on film, but closes well on passes to make a play. He does a good job of reading the quarterback and puts himself in good position to get the ball.

Run Support / Tackling

Williams is a physical defender who has no problem playing in the box. He is able to take on blocks and shows the ability to shed and make a play. Williams is a physical hitter who delivers impact hits to the ball carrier. He excels playing closer to the line of scrimmage and shows the ability to sift through traffic and make plays in pursuit.

Projection

Derek Williams is already an excellent defender, but his growth potential could take his game to new heights as he grows. He has the athleticism to play in the secondary but could grow into a player who can play in the box full time. Williams’ versatility will help him be a difference maker at the next level, where he should become an all conference type performer.
