Breakout Performance: Pat Garwo
Boston College lost starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec to a hand injury and needed some new stars to emerge on offense and pick up the slack. Pat Garwo has been on the radar since AJ Dillon left but didn’t have any dominant games last year. Garwo was up and down this year with a big performance against UMass, sandwiched by nondescript games against Colgate and Temple. With an SEC opponent in town, he turned in his best performance of the young season and helped the Eagles grab a 41 – 34 win.
Garwo got off to a fast start. Missouri had a 7 – 0 lead midway through the first quarter but that would soon change. Garwo took the hand off and slid through a hole on the left side, side stepped the diving safety and cut across the field for a 67 yard touchdown run. It was a good show of Garwo’s nimble feet, power and burst. The long run tied the game, but was just the beginning of a big day for the emerging running back.
Garwo ran with good vision and power, grinding away at the Missouri defense and wearing them down. He found the holes his offensive line was creating and broke tackles to pick up sizeable chunks of yardage to keep the offense ahead of schedule. Garwo showed the balance and burst to take advantage of the running lanes and finished his runs with pop. His consistent running opened up windows for Dennis Grosel and the passing game to make enough plays for Boston College to stay somewhat balanced and outscore Missouri.
Pat Garwo ran the ball 25 times for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns on Saturday, pounding away at the Missouri defense in a dominant performance. He had already run for over 100 yards once this season, but this was his first big game against a power five opponent. With Boston College searching for more stars on offense, Garwo submitted his best performance of his career. His continued emergence would be tremendous for the offense as they adapt to life without Jurkovec.
