Dont’e Thornton: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Dont’e Thornton has committed to Oregon. Today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a scouting report based on his film.
Dont’e Thornton is a tall receiver with good hands. He has excellent height, with a frame to add good weight as he matures and gets stronger. Thornton is already imposing on the football field, the added bulk will only accentuate this advantage. Thornton has a large catch radius and the body control to adjust to poorly thrown balls. He looks very comfortable catching the football. He is a force in the redzone, showing the ability to use his frame and leaping ability to win in contested catch situations. Thornton gets off the line quickly and moves fluidly for a player his size. He may not be a burner but does have good speed to get behind the defense.
Thornton is a solid route runner who gets into his pattern and positions himself well to give his quarterback a target. He will need to get quicker in and out of his breaks to get separation against better defensive backs in college. Thornton picks up good yardage after the catch, using his speed and ability to break tackles, but will need to be more elusive side to side as he moves forward in his career. Overall, Thornton is an imposing receiver with a high ceiling. Dont’e Thornton will be a good receiver who can move the chains consistently while also posing a deep threat, he could be an all conference type performer at the power five level.
