Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Yanni Karlaftis has committed to Purdue. Today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a scouting report based on his film.
Yanni Karlaftis is a long, athletic linebacker with good instincts for the game. He has good height and length and will continue to bulk up and get stronger as he matures. Karlaftis has the potential build of an edge player, he has long arms which he uses to keep blockers from getting into his body, before disengaging and rushing past them. He has good acceleration and burst and can close on the quarterback or ball carrier in a hurry. Karlaftis’ height and long arms make him disruptive in passing lanes even when he doesn’t get to the quarterback. He is a solid tackler in space who squares up the ball carrier and delivers a good blow when he hits.
Karlaftis also has the fluid athleticism to be a traditional linebacker. He has good instincts and sifts through traffic well. He displays the change of direction skills and hands to be an asset in pass coverage as well. He is comfortable in zone coverage and in man coverage against tight ends and running backs. He has good versatility and can play multiple linebacker spots in different schemes. Karlaftis does not have great long speed and will need to work on his straight line speed at the next level. He will need to get stronger to handle bigger more athletic blockers in college. Overall, Karlaftis is a complete linebacker who impacts the game in many ways. Yanni Karlaftis will be a quality linebacker with good versatility who will be a starter at the power five level.
