Tony Grimes: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Tony Grimes committed to North Carolina, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Tony Grimes is a complete player in the defensive backfield. He has good size and length with the ability to keep getting stronger as he matures. He is a physical player who could play safety at the next level if needed (he plays safety a lot on film as well). As a cornerback, Grimes has good footwork and is a fluid athlete who can turn and run with the best receivers. He has excellent long speed and can run plays down that most players would not have a chance at. He is explosive in short spaces and comes out of his backpedal naturally with pace and balance. Grimes is quick when reacting to the ball and does an excellent job of tracking the ball and completing the play. He has good ball skills and does a good job of winning in 50/50 situations. Grimes is a solid tackler who is not afraid of contact, he does a good job in run support. He has good technique for a young player and appears to be a polished high school player. There are no major weaknesses in Grimes game, he will need to maintain his hip flexibility as he gets bigger and stronger, but there’s no reason to think he won’t do that. Tony Grimes has the tools to be an elite college cornerback who will be one of the best in the country at his position.
