Drake Maye: A Quick Look At What The Tar Heels Are Getting
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Earlier this year, Drake Maye committed to North Carolina, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Drake Maye is a tall quarterback who has room to add strength to his good frame. He uses his excellent height to scan the field with ease and choose his targets downfield. Maye has elite level ball placement, he throws a catchable ball with great accuracy. He is able to throw players open placing the ball where defenders cannot make a play on it. He has good arm strength, and throws the ball with great touch, allowing him to attack all parts of the defense and fit the ball behind the zone.
Maye has a good release and is able to get the ball out quickly with accuracy. He maintains a good rhythm in the pocket and throws quickly and on time helping to minimize the effect of the pass rush. Maye needs to improve his footwork to get the most out of his arm, especially when he leaves the pocket. He is not a great runner but instead is more a traditional pocket passer. There isn’t a lot to be critical of with Maye, he is an advanced passer who rarely misses his mark. Drake Maye has the tools to be a star quarterback for the Tar Heels in the ACC.
