Week Five Stars, 2022
Every week is a new opportunity for college football players to shine. Here’s a look at a few of the stars from week five:
QB – Max Duggan – TCU
Max Duggan did not win the starting job coming out of camp, but a week one injury to Chandler Morris pushed Duggan into action and the veteran quarterback has thrived since. On Saturday, he was unstoppable in TCU‘s 55 – 24 demolition of Oklahoma. Duggan beat the Sooners’ defense with his arm, finding open receivers downfield and his feet, making big plays as a runner. He engineered an offense that was in the zone, scoring 41 points in the first half and 55 for the game. Duggan finished the game 22 of 33 for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns without an interception, and 5 carries for 116 yards with 2 touchdowns on the ground. It was a dominant performance by the quarterback who has stepped up and starred for Sonny Dykes and the Horned Frogs.

DE – Felix Anudike-Uzomah – Kansas State
Kansas State did not suffer a letdown after their big win over Oklahoma, but instead picked up a quality 37 – 28 win over Texas Tech. Felix Anudike-Uzomah was a star for the Wildcats defense, helping to pressure Donovan Smith and keep the Red Raiders offense from finding a rhythm. Anudike-Uzomah took up residence in the offensive backfield, getting penetration regularly and pressuring the quarterback over and over again. He tallied 6 tackles, 3 sacks and a fumble forced in a disruptive performance. Anudike-Uzomah is the star on the defensive front for Kansas State, he showed why on Saturday.

CB – Clark Phillips – Utah
Utah jumped on Oregon State early and pulled away for a 42 – 16 win. Clark Phillips had a remarkable day for the Utes, creating offense with his great play on defense. The junior cornerback ruined Oregon State’s opening drive with an excellent interception and return that would set-up the offense with a short field for the games opening touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Phillips jumped an out route on the other sideline and returned this interception for a touchdown himself. To complete the hat-trick Phillips won a jump-ball in the end-zone for his third interception of the game during the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 3 tackles 3 interceptions and the one touchdown. Phillips is an excellent cover corner and proved it when Oregon State tested him Saturday.

RB – Jahmyr Gibbs – Alabama
Jahmyr Gibbs hadn’t had a signature game for Alabama since transferring into the program this off-season. With Bryce Young leaving the game in the first half, the Tide needed weapons to step up on offense and Gibbs was one of the guys who answered the call in the second half of the 49 – 26 win over Arkansas. He helped set-up the last score of the first half with his catch and run ability out of the backfield, but did the majority of his damage late in the game. Gibbs was instrumental in putting the game out of reach with two long fourth quarter touchdowns where he showed off his electric acceleration and speed. Gibbs totaled 206 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 18 carries, while also catching 2 passes for 20 yards. Gibbs is a versatile weapon who can hit a home-run on any given play, he showed that explosive ability against Arkansas.
WR – Trey Palmer – Nebraska
Nebraska used the bye week to reset themselves and picked up a 35 – 21 win over Indiana this weekend. Trey Palmer had an explosive game for the Huskers, providing a big play threat on offense. He was a difficult cover for the Indiana defensive backs all game, making several big plays over the course of the game. He made his biggest play in the fourth quarter, beating the defense deep and catching a 71 yard touchdown to put the Cornhuskers ahead for good. Palmer made 8 catches for 157 yards and that key touchdown, while also returning 3 punts for 37 yards. The transfer from LSU showed the big play ability he brings to Nebraska now and moving forward.
