Star Performance: Amare Barno

Virginia Tech‘s Amare Barno had a big 2020 season for the Hokies and picked up where he left off in 2021. On Friday night, Virginia Tech rode their defense to an upset win over North Carolina 17 – 10. Barno and the rest of the Hokies’ defensive front were active from start to finish, pestering Sam Howell and forcing negative plays from the Tar Heels offense.

This performance from Barno was not unexpected, he proved he was a disruptive player during the 2020 season. He tallied 16 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 2 fumbles forced last year, consistently making big plays for the defense. Of course, 2020 was an odd season and everyone is anxious to see what 2021 brings, on Friday night Barno showed that his productive play was here to stay.

Barno was in the backfield regularly, showing the length, quickness and instincts to beat blockers and get to the ball carrier. He pressured Sam Howell throughout the game, but was good against the North Carolina running game as well. It was rare to see a Tar Heel drive that was not impacted by number 11 for Virginia Tech. Barno totalled 6 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks and a fumble forced while leading an impressive performance by the Virginia Tech defense.

Virginia Tech’s defense set the tone early in the game and kept North Carolina off balance for four quarters. Amare Barno led the way and proved that he is ready to build on his strong 2020 campaign with an even better 2021. He has set the bar high in the season opener and is well on his way to being one of the best defensive ends in the country.
