Maalik Murphy: Scouting Report

QB Rank: #7
Team: Texas
Class: 2022
Size

Maalik Murphy has prototypical height at the quarterback position and a frame that has plenty of room to add weight. He will need to add weight as he matures, but should have no trouble doing so. Murphy’s size is a plus and allows him see the field easily and take on the rigors of the sport.

Release/Mechanics

Murphy has quick feet and does a good job of setting his feet under him and stepping into his throw when possible. He does have a bit of a windup when he throws the football which makes his release longer. It would benefit Murphy to tighten up his release some as he develops.

Arm

Murphy has elite arm strength and will only improve in this area as he gets stronger and more sound in his technique. He generates excellent velocity on his throws and can squeeze the ball into the tightest of windows. He stretches the field and can out-throw the coverage on any play. His accuracy is good, though cleaning up his release would help him be more consistent here.

Mobility

Murphy has quick feet and moves around the pocket comfortably. He navigates the pocket well and can throw on the run when he leaves the pocket. He has above average speed and some suddenness to his game that allows him to be a threat in the run game. Murphy is solid as a runner and should develop more power in the run game as he fills out.

Intangibles

Murphy shows a willingness to read the defense and be patient in the pocket that is not common for a young player. Murphy is competitive and will stand in the pocket and take a hit, but still deliver the pass. He is still raw as a prospect but with more experience will only improve his feel for the game.

Projection

Maalik Murphy has all of the tools to be an elite quarterback. He has an outstanding arm, good size, good feet and shows the ability to read the defense. He is an excellent prospect and with experience and development he should become one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
