Gavin Wimsatt: Scouting Report
Size
Gavin Wimsatt has good height for a quarterback and a projectable frame that will add good weight easily. He is already starting to fill out and should continue to do so as his career progresses. Wimsatt’s size will allow him to endure the physical demands of the position and allow him to be effective from the pocket.
Release/Mechanics
Wimsatt has excellent feet, he takes quick steps and always seems to have good balance when moving around the pocket. His release is quick enough and there is a minimal windup to his delivery. He does fall off balance to his left side when he throws at times, costing him some accuracy on those throws.
Arm
Wimsatt has a good arm and can drive the ball downfield. He has good touch and ball placement on deep throws, but does need to work on his accuracy some on intermediate throws. He has the ability to throw off different platforms and can make impressive throws while on the move or taking a hit.
Mobility
Wimsatt has a bounce in his step and moves very well in and around the pocket. He is a fluid athlete who changes directions well and can evade defenders in a variety of ways. He has a long stride and is fast in the open field, sometimes deceptively so. Wimsatt’s running ability is something defenses will have to account for on every play.
Intangibles
Wimsatt is a playmaker, who can always fix a broken play and turn a negative into a positive for his team. He does need to improve his anticipation and not hold the ball as long as he does at times. He is still an unfinished product but should only improve as his feel for the game improves.
Projection
Gavin Wimsatt is a true dual threat quarterback who will give defenses fits with his throwing ability as well as his explosive running skills. He has a good arm and excellent feet that will help him develop into a player who could start for an upper echelon power five team.
