JJ McCarthy: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year we will review the film of some of the top prospects and give you a breakdown of what we see. Last May, JJ McCarthy committed to Michigan, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
JJ McCarthy has excellent arm talent at the quarterback position. He has average height for the position and a very slender build, but the ball just pops out of his hand with velocity and accuracy. The velocity is elite and the accuracy is not far behind, McCarthy can throw the pigskin with the best of them. He has good throwing mechanics and a sound release, allowing him to make the most of his natural arm talent. He needs to improve his footwork some, as he tends be inconsistent with his lower half at times.
McCarthy is not a running quarterback, but has above average athleticism and can escape the pocket when needed to buy time or to run. At times he does give too much ground when eluding the rush and will need to be mindful of that in college. McCarthy needs to get better at recognizing coverage faster and finding the open receiver on time, especially in the middle of the field. This is not uncommon with young quarterbacks and should get better with coaching. McCarthy will need to add a lot of bulk at the next level, but he has all the talent to be a star. JJ McCarthy has the ability be an excellent college quarterback who is a star in college.
