Christian Leary: Scouting Report

Christian Leary is an explosive receiver who is a versatile weapon. Leary’s speed, acceleration and quickness are obvious, defenders appear to have an angle on him only to end up watching the back of his jersey as he races past them to score. He gets up to top speed quickly and is elusive in the open field. Leary is a shorter receiver but has a strong build and plays with good strength. His strength, balance and low center of gravity make him tough to tackle even when defenders do get a hand on him.

Leary can take a direct snap, a jet sweep or a screen and turn the simple play into a big play and will always be effective in many ways. Downfield Leary does a good job of tracking the football and using his body to shield off defenders and make the catch. While he is not a big receiver, he understands body positioning and is able to win contested balls. Leary relies on his great speed and quickness but will need to get better as a route runner at the next level. We would like to see him high point the ball more often even though he usually has the defender on his back and makes the catch. Leary is not a tall wide receiver and that’s likely not going to change, but he makes up for it with his athleticism. Christian Leary is an elite athlete who will be a scary weapon out of the slot at the college level.
