Jahvaree Ritzie: A Quick Look At What The Tar Heels Are Getting
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Jahvaree Ritzie committed to North Carolina, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Jahvaree Ritzie is an imposing player with very good length and a frame that has room to fill out. He displays very good flexibility and fluidity in his movements and looks comfortable bending around the corner or crashing down the edge to pursue ball carriers. Ritzie has a good (not great) get off and is a natural gap shooter. He has a great motor and does not give up on plays even if he is caught out of position, pursuing the ball until the whistle. Ritzie plays with a ton of energy and is an explosive tackler that makes his presence felt with regularity when hitting ball carriers.
This is a player that shows a willingness to use his hands but must improve his technique in this regard. There is minimal use of pass rush moves in his film as he relies mostly on his size, athleticism, and instincts to make plays at the high school level. You would also like to see more effectiveness in his speed to power rush, but this should come with more focus on his technique (along with some pass rush moves). Ritzie is average at recognizing the zone read ball carrier and at times does not feel the screen being set up behind him. That being said, he shows elite quick pass recognition and consistently shuts down his rush to bat passes down or disrupt the quarterback’s natural passing lanes. Jahvaree Ritzie is a high energy player that is still somewhat raw, but should develop into an excellent player, capable of playing on the edge or inside as a three technique.
