Freshman Five: Week Five, 2022
True freshmen are looking for the opportunity to shine early in their career. Here’s a look at five who took advantage of their chances in week five:
RB – Ashton Jeanty – Boise State
Boise State’s running attack led the way to a dominant second half in the Broncos’ 35 – 13 win over San Diego State. True freshman running back, Ashton Jeanty played a big role in that domination. The athletic young running back was able to break a few big runs, showing the elusiveness and extra gear that sets him apart from most players. He ran for 82 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and caught a pass for 7 yards. Jeanty is a difference maker who is seeing more time as the season progresses, he should continue to be a key contributor for the Broncos.

RB – Quinshon Judkins – Mississippi
The Rebels have a star running back in Zach Evans, but in the 22 – 19 win over Kentucky it was true freshman Quinshon Judkins that carried the load. Judkins showed explosiveness and breakaway ability on a first quarter touchdown run, but did a good job of being a downhill runner and grinding out yardage as well. He was a consistent threat who kept the offense on schedule and helped grind out a hard fought win on Saturday. Judkins finished the game with 15 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown, also catching a pass for 14 yards. The young running back has been very good all season and proved he could produce against tough competition this week.

DT – Jaheim Oatis – Alabama
Alabama held off a second half rally and pulled away for a 49 – 26 win over Arkansas this Saturday. The defense was stout most of the game and held up in the red-zone to hold the Razorbacks to three when they were put in some tough spots. A big part of that performance was massive true freshman defensive tackle, Jaheim Oatis. Oatis is an absolute space eater in the middle of the defense, but also has the quickness and instincts to be a disruptive play-maker. He tallied 8 tackles, 1 tackles for loss and 1 sack in the win. Alabama’s defense has plenty of athletes, but they are at their best with a monster like Oatis in the middle.

CB – Toriano Pride – Clemson
Clemson had an impressive 30 – 20 win over NC State at home this weekend. Toriano Pride was asked to play a key role in the secondary and came up big in the win. He made a key play in the third quarter with the Tigers holding a 20 – 13 lead. He was able to adjust to and intercept a tipped pass that set the Tigers up for a field-goal that would give them a two score lead. Pride had 5 tackles and that 1 interception during the game, helping the Tigers slow the NC State offense. He has made a few plays already this year and appears to be a promising player in the defensive backfield moving forward.

WR – Tetairoa McMillan – Arizona
McMillan has been getting playing time all season for Arizona, but had his most productive game of the season in Saturday’s 43 – 20 win over Colorado. He showed off his catch radius a few times during the game, coming down with a couple of one handed catches. McMillan also caught a touchdown in the third quarter that put the game out of reach. He finished the game with 5 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. McMillan has been a factor in the passing game and his role appears to be increasing as the season progresses.
