Fresh Performance: Seyi Oladipo

When injury hit the Boise State secondary on Friday night, Seyi Oladipo got his opportunity to shine. The true freshman came in at safety and made an instant impact on the game. Boise State was already in control of the game, but Oladipo’s big plays removed any hope that UTEP had of mounting a comeback. The Broncos rode their opportunistic defense to a 54 – 13 win.

Oladipo was pressed into duty late in the second quarter. Boise State was protecting a 34 – 13 lead but UTEP was moving the ball deep into Broncos’ territory looking to cut the lead to 14. Oladipo stepped in front of an errant second down pass and returned the interception across midfield. He did fumble, but the ball was recovered out of bounds and Boise State was set-up for one more first half touchdown and a potential 14 point swing.

On UTEP’s first drive of the second half, Oladipo showed his aggression in run support. He shot into the backfield and tackled Ronald Awatt for a five yard loss on the play. The play forced a third and long and continued a trend of making big plays for the freshman safety. Oladipo was not done yet, on the next UTEP possession he jumped the route and made his second interception of the game, returning this one inside the ten yard line to put the offense in great position again.

Statistically, Oladipo recorded a tackle for loss, intercepted two passes and broke up another pass. The young defensive back proved he is ready to contribute whenever needed in the Bronco’s secondary. Seyi Oladipo set the bar high with his performance last night and will be expected to continue to make plays when the opportunity presents itself again.
