Sam McCall: Scouting Report

CB Rank: —
Team: Florida State
Class: 2022
Size

Sam McCall is a taller cornerback with good length. He has a muscular build and will continue to fill out as he matures. McCall is a bigger cornerback who can play on the outside against bigger receivers. He has good size and strength and could play safety if needed.

Athleticism

McCall is a smooth player who is a good all around athlete. He has above average long speed and can keep up with receivers on deep plays or tracing them across the field. McCall has good burst showing the ability to accelerate and close quickly. He also has the lateral agility to stick with receivers in and out of their breaks.

Hips/Technique

McCall is fluid in and out of his breaks, showing the ability to flip his hips and run with receivers. He has a good backpedal and the ability to break out of it efficiently to close on plays in front of him. McCall is comfortable in man coverage with the ability to shadow receivers in coverage. He also has a good feel for where offensive players are and displays good range when playing zone.

Ball Skills

McCall excels with the ball in the air, showing off his ball skills on both offense and defense. He tracks the ball effectively, locating it quickly and putting himself in good position to make the play. McCall is excellent at high-pointing the football, doing a good job of winning in contested situations. He has soft hands and makes quarterbacks pay for poorly thrown passes.

Physicality/Tackling

McCall is aggressive in the secondary. He is physical with receivers at the line and does not shy away from contact when he closes on the play. McCall takes good angles downhill to get to the ball carrier quickly and get him down. He has the physicality to play anywhere in the secondary and be effective.

Projection

Sam McCall is a complete player who can be effective in many spots at the next level. He has the instincts and physical tools to be a quality college cornerback or could move to safety and be a star there as well. McCall has the potential to be a good college corner and will develop into a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
