Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Devonta Smith has committed to Alabama. Today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Devonta Smith is a versatile cornerback with good physical tools. He has good height and has added good weight to his frame over his high school career. Smith has good speed and is a rangy defender who covers a lot of ground in the secondary. He has the fluid hips and feet to play in man coverage but also shows the instincts and range of a deep safety. Smith has the leaping ability to win in jump ball situations and matches up well with bigger receivers on the outside. Despite his size and strength he still shows good coverage skills against quicker receivers making him scheme versatile.
Smith does a good job in pursuit and wraps up the ball carrier effectively. He attacks blockers and is able to make his way to the football through traffic. Smith plays all over the secondary in high school and has a lot of versatility, but will need to hone his technique as he settles into a position at the next level. He has good athleticism but will need to maintain his flexibility if he continues to fill out. Overall, Smith brings a wide array of skills in the secondary. Devonta Smith is a talented cornerback who is growing into his game and will develop into a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
