WR Rankings: Quentin Johnston

Updated: 01/24/2022

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Quentin Johnston, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

TCU wide receiver, Quentin Johnston made some big plays as a true freshman in 2020 and built on that in 2021. He started slow, but had some big games in the middle of the season, including a three touchdown performance against Oklahoma. An injury cut his season short, but in nine games Johnston had 33 catches for 634 yards and 6 touchdowns. The second year star led the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, despite missing three games. He is a big threat on the perimeter and is becoming one of the better wide receivers in college football.

Johnston is a big receiver at 6’4″ 201 lbs and uses that size to make big catches in coverage. He has a good catch radius and is comfortable fighting off defenders and making plays on the ball through the coverage. Johnston tracks the ball well and has the body control and timing to put himself in good position to win contested balls and then high points the ball to make it difficult for the defense to make a play. He is strong enough to fight through contact to get to the football, allowing him to make plays when defenders have good coverage. Johnston is one of those receivers who is open even when he is covered, because of his ability to consistently win in contested situations.

Though Johnston is a big receiver, he also has some shiftiness in space and makes big plays after the catch. He does a good job of getting up-field quickly after making the catch. Johnston has some wiggle in his game and is slippery in the open field, which combined with his strength makes him difficult to tackle. Defensive backs have a tough time bringing him down one on one and Johnston has the speed to turn a missed tackle into a long score for the offense.

Quentin Johnston has the ability to get open downfield. He is excellent with the ball in the air and makes his quarterback look good with some incredible catches. Johnston is able to work the short and intermediate passing game as well, continuing to develop his game and become a complete receiver. His strong play and physical tools make him one of the more exciting receivers in college football.
