Week 2 Stars, 2022
Every week is a new opportunity for college football players to shine. Here’s a look at a few of the stars from week two:
LB – Drew Sanders – Arkansas
Drew Sanders transferred from Alabama to Arkansas this off-season and was expected to be a key contributor immediately. He stole the show in week two, helping lead the Razorbacks to a 44 – 30 win over South Carolina. From the opening whistle, Sanders was everywhere. He diagnosed run plays quickly and showed off his athleticism in pursuit, he made plays in coverage and made a big impact rushing the quarterback. Sanders tallied 11 tackles, with 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 fumbles forced, 1 pass break-up and 1 QB hurry during the game. In the SEC opener for Arkansas, Sanders found ways to impact every aspect of the game.

QB – Sam Hartman – Wake Forest
Sam Hartman missed the start of the 2022 season with an undisclosed “non-football medical issue”. News broke last week that Hartman would make his season debut against Vanderbilt and star quarterback did not waste any time acclimating himself in a 45 – 25 win. Hartman looked like his old self, a welcome sight for Demon Deacons’ fans. He was accurate, made good decisions with the football and showed good mobility. He finished the game 18 of 27 for 300 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions and 12 rushing yards. It was an encouraging debut after a trying preseason for the Wake Forest quarterback.

RB – Khalan Laborn – Marshall
Marshall pulled off one of the big upsets of week two with a 26 – 21 win over Notre Dame. Khalan Laborn carried the load for the Marshall offense, grinding out yardage and keeping the Marshall offense on the field and moving. He was consistent throughout the game, running decisively and getting downhill quickly to get yardages and move the pile. He accounted for nearly half of Marshall’s offensive yardage in the game. Laborn was a workhorse, finishing the game with 31 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown to go with 5 receiving yards on 1 catch. The senior running back is off to an excellent start in 2022, as are the Thundering Herd at 2 – 0.

S – Trevon Flowers – Tennessee
Tennessee avenged last year’s loss to Pittsburgh with a 34 – 27 overtime win, thanks in no small part to the play of senior safety, Trevon Flowers. Flowers made a big play early in the game, with the Panthers ahead 10 – 0 and driving for a potential third score, he intercepted a deflected pass while tapping his toes in bounds before going out of the back of the end-zone. The interception flipped the early momentum of the game and would lead to a Tennessee touchdown on the ensuing drive. In overtime, Flowers helped the seal the game with a sack on third and goal from the 8 yard line that set up fourth and goal from the 20. He was impactful all game, recording 7 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception in the win, leading to a 2 – 0 start for the Volunteers.

WR – Jordan Addison – USC
USC showed off their offensive firepower early and held off a late rally from Stanford to secure a 41 – 28 win this week. Jordan Addison was dynamic, giving Trojan’s fans a taste of his immense talent. Addison was able to beat Stanford’s defensive backs deep for big plays downfield and also catch short passes and make defenders miss for big plays after the catch. Addison was a mismatch on the perimeter, finishing the game with 7 catches for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. This was the type of performance we have come to expect from last season’s Biletnikoff winner and hope to see more of going forward.
