True Freshmen Mountain 2020: December 2 Update
The True Freshmen Mountain is our way of tracking the impact college football’s newcomers are having. It’s like the game, King of the Mountain, the player on the top is King, and everyone else is doing their best to knock him off the peak. We will update the list every week adding in the performances from that week. The mountain is based on a players performance for the season. We are judging players based on their production, the level of competition they performed against and the eye test. To see last week’s true freshmen mountain click here.
King Of The Mountain
Malachi Moore – Alabama
Stats: 34 Tak 4 TFL 6 PBU 3 Int 1 FF 1 FR 1 TD
Moore was his playmaking self in Alabama’s 42 – 13 win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl. He was a key player in a defensive effort that held the Tigers to just 13 points, with 7 of them coming late in the fourth quarter when the game was already decided. Moore had 3 tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception in the game. Moore makes big plays every week and has earned his spot at the top of the mountain.
Top Challengers
Myles Murphy – Clemson
Season Stats: 28 tackles 8.5 TFL 3.5 Sacks 2 fumble forced, 1 QB Hurry
Clemson dominated against Pittsburgh, but Murphy had a rather quiet game recording just 1 tackle on the day. He got off to a hot start this season but has not been as productive of late. Murphy may not show up in the stat sheet but he is doing a good job at the point of attack and continues to create trouble for the opposing offensive line.
Peter Skoronski – Northwestern
Stats: 5 starts at Left Tackle
Northwestern suffered their first loss of the season, but Skoronski continued his stellar play on the left side of the offensive line. Skoronski continues to do a good job protecting Peyton Ramsey’s blind side and is also solid as a run blocker. He is playing very well as a true freshman on the offensive line, which is very uncommon to see.
Closing In On The Top Group
DJ Uiagalelei – Clemson
Stats: 78/116 883 yds 5 TD 0 Int / 28 car 60 yds 4 TD
Uiagalelei returned to his role as the backup for Trevor Lawrence, but got plenty of playing time in the blowout win over Pittsburgh. He continues to play well and has shown that he has the tools to be a star in his own right.
Noah Sewell – Oregon
Stats: 23 Tak 5 TFL 2 Sacks 1 FF
Sewell had his most productive game so far this season against Oregon State. He was all over the field Friday, recording 10 tackles with 2 tackles for loss. Sewell has made at least 1 tackle for loss in all four of Oregon’s games this year. The talented linebacker has excellent size and speed and is just scratching the surface of his immense potential.
Jordan Addison – Pittsburgh
Stats: 57 rec 652 yds 4 TD / 8 Car 55 yds / 2 PR 15 yds / 2 KR 39 yds
Addison returned to action for Pittsburgh but the Panthers were no match for Clemson this week. He caught 5 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown and also has 1 carry for 2 yards. Addison was coming off an injury but still managed to find the end zone against one of the best teams in college football.
On The Slope
Jalen Berger – Wisconsin
Stats: 30 car 180 yards 1 TD / 2 rec 13 yards
Berger and Wisconsin had an unscheduled bye week due to Covid issues at Minnesota. Berger has played very well when he has gotten the chance and we expect that to continue.
Stats: 89 car 460 yds 4 TD / 24 rec 303 yds 3 TD / 8 KR 205 yds
Gibbs didn’t need a lot of touches to do damage against Duke this weekend. He carried the ball 6 times for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also catching 4 passes for 48 yards. Gibbs has been a dynamic weapon for the Yellow Jackets this year and should be a star in the near future.
Deuce Vaughn – Kansas State
Stats: 113 car 517 yds 5 TD / 21 rec 389 yds 2 TD
Kansas State lost to Baylor on a late field goal but Vaughn had his best game in a while. The explosive back finally got loose and made some big plays. He ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and added on 19 receiving yards on 3 catches. Vaughn is a versatile weapon that just needs a little space to make big plays.

The season is winding down and plenty of freshmen have had opportunities to make an impact. With a few weeks to go it will be interesting to see if new players can make enough of an impact to make their way up the list. We will revisit the true freshman mountain weekly to update the rankings as the season moves forward.
