Risers In The CFB Saturdays College Football QB Rankings: December 2, 2020

As the season winds down and with a larger sample size to see the best players, we have updated the College Football QB rankings. A few notes before we discuss the rankings themselves.

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

You can view the College Football QB Rankings here.

Here is a look at a few of the quarterbacks that have debuted or made a major move up in the rankings:

JT Daniels – Georgia

Daniels career has taken a winding path that has now landed him as the starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs. He was a five star recruit in the 2018 class and signed with USC, where he won the starting job as a true freshman. He showed signs as a true freshman, but USC was a team in turmoil and the season did not go well. Daniels suffered an ACL tear in the first game of the 2019 season and watched as Kedon Slovis thrived in the air raid offense he was supposed to be playing in. Daniels transferred to Georgia in the summer of 2020, but had to wait until he was fully healthy to make his impact for the Bulldogs. He has the physical tools to be an excellent pocket passer in the Georgia offense. Daniels has excellent arm strength and accuracy and has the functional mobility and pocket awareness to make those skills count. Now that he is finally healthy and playing for Georgia he has been able to show what he can do.

Daniels has only made two starts for the Bulldogs but the early returns are promising. He has completed 70.4 percent of his passes for 540 yards and 6 touchdowns against just 1 interception. Daniels has made big plays in the passing game when his team has needed them. Most importantly, the Georgia offense has finally found a rhythm with Daniels at quarterback. It’s obviously early in Daniels’ tenure as the starter at Georgia, but he has quickly showed why he was so highly thought of as a recruit and should only improve as he gets comfortable running a new offense with a new team.

Grant Wells – Marshall

Grant Wells burst on the scene earlier this season with a big game in his season opener. The redshirt freshman has matured and improved significantly over the course of the season and has elevated his game to new heights. Wells has a strong arm and throws an accurate ball with good spin. He has quick feet and can make plays as a runner as well. He is not the biggest quarterback but is certainly big enough and has done a good job of adding good weight since high school. Wells has the raw ability and has improved his decision making and understanding of the offense quickly, helping him find success in his first season as a starter.

Wells has led Marshall to a 7 – 0 start so far this season, including wins over Appalachian State and FAU. Wells continues to make big plays in the passing game, but he has also learned to limit his turnovers. Through seven games, he has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,674 yards and 16 touchdowns with just 4 interceptions. Wells has been an effective runner as well, picking up 155 yards on 36 carries and 2 touchdowns on the ground. Wells has brought balance to the Marshall offense and helped the team become more explosive. The Thundering Herd are averaging almost 12 points per game more than last year and are on the verge of completing an undefeated regular season. The future is bright for Marshall with Wells at quarterback going forward.

Grayson McCall – Coastal Carolina

Similar to Wells, McCall is also a redshirt freshman leading a group of five team to an undefeated record in his first year as a starter. McCall is a very different player from Wells but also very effective. McCall is a tall, slightly slender quarterback who has excellent mobility. He is a steady threat in the run game and uses that threat to pick up yardage and create opportunities as a passer. He is accurate throwing the football and is creative with the football when the play breaks down. McCall has had a remarkable season and has cemented himself as the best quarterback in the Sunbelt Conference.

McCall has led Coastal Carolina to a 9 – 0 start to the season, including wins over Louisiana and Appalachian State. The Chanticleers are averaging 38.7 points per game and the play of their quarterback has been the main reason for their strong offensive play. McCall has completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 1,747 yards and 20 touchdowns against just 1 interception. He has also been a key running threat for his team, running for 365 yards and 5 touchdowns on 74 carries. McCall has been a true dual threat and has helped Coastal Carolina reach new heights as a program.
