Transfer Turnaround: Isaiah Bowser

Isaiah Bowser transferred from Northwestern to UCF this off-season looking to re-energize his career. With Gus Malzahn taking over as the head coach for the Knights, Bowser the saw the potential to star as a power runner in Malzahn’s offense. He was the primary running back for UCF Thursday night during a dramatic come from behind 36 – 31 victory.

Bowser had a good freshman season at Northwestern in 2018, rushing for 866 yards at 4.4 yards per carry. Unfortunately, he was never able to build on that success for the Wildcats and ran for 204 yards in 2019 and 230 yards in 2020. His role decreased and Bowser only received 17 carries over his last four games at Northwestern. It was obvious Bowser needed a change of scenery and it seems he found the right landing spot for him.

Bowser was consistent throughout the game, making big runs consistently. He was a steady and reliable runner even when the offense was struggling and broke off big runs that helped the team comeback from a 21 – 0 deficit. Bowser wore down the Boise State defense over the course of the game and actually ran for over 100 yards in the second half and scored the go-ahead touchdown with just over four minutes left in the game.

Bowser was everything UCF thought they were getting and more. He is a bruising runner who finishes runs violently, wearing down tacklers as the game progresses. He also showed some burst and quick feet as he shot through holes quickly and chewed up yardage in sizeable chunks. Bowser finished with 33 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 4 catches for 29 yards. UCF already had an exciting big play offense, Bowser brings a physical running game making this a good fit for both the team and the player.
