Star Performance: CJ Verdell
Oregon watched Minnesota control the clock and run the ball with good success against Ohio State in week one. The Ducks turned to CJ Verdell as they aimed to implement their own ball control philosophy in week two. Verdell delivered with an excellent performance in Oregon’s huge 35 – 28 road win.
Verdell scored twice in the second quarter, getting to the edge against the defense as a runner and a receiver for a pair of 14 yards scores. He was able to beat the linebackers to the corner and scored easily on both plays. After proving he could move the ball effectively as a runner in the first half, Verdell was ready for more big plays in the second half.
Verdell’s biggest run of the game came on the Ducks first drive of the second half. On third and three Verdell broke through the line with a burst of speed, made a subtle move on the safety and broke away for a 77 yard touchdown. Verdell’s third score opened the game up giving Oregon a two score lead and creating the separation the Ducks needed to hold off Ohio State late.
CJ Verdell carried the offense with 20 carries for 161 and 2 touchdowns on the ground to go with 3 catches for 34 yards and a touchdown as a receiver. He dominated against the Ohio State defense and helped Oregon put itself in good position for a playoff run. The Ducks have not been as explosive in the passing game, but with a back like Verdell carrying the load the offense was still effective.
