Quintin Somerville: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, Quintin Somerville committed to Michigan, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Quintin Somerville is not the tallest or longest prospect but has a very good physique coupled with natural athleticism for the position. He is one of the most polished pass rushers you will see at the high school level and uses an impressive arsenal of pass rush moves. On film Somerville uses good pad level, an inside and outside rip move, as well as an inside swim move to beat blockers on a consistent basis. When Somerville is not able to reach the passer, he understands how to time his jump and deflects passes at the line of scrimmage. His hand usage is impressive when defending the run and pass, as he keeps blockers at bay by extending his arms and quickly disengaging to pursue the play. When he is tasked with holding edge in run defense Somerville does an excellent job of keeping his outside arm free, allowing him to disengage with relative ease. This is a player that is very comfortable fighting through multiple blockers and one who consistently gives a strong effort. He is a good wrap up tackler and hits with some pop. Somerville has a good (not great) initial get off and lateral quickness but lacks high end athleticism. Although he is an above average athlete for the position, he has limited closing speed, change of direction skills, and room on his frame for additional bulk and strength. Overall, Quintin Somerville projects as a good power five pass rusher who will play with excellent skill and technique but lacks high end athleticism.
