JD Coffey: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, JD Coffey committed to Texas, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.

JD Coffey is a complete safety who can play the position in multiple schemes. Coffey has above average size and can play close to the line of scrimmage as an in the box safety. He has good instincts, plugs the hole quickly and is a striker at the safety position. Coffey also has the speed and range to be a deep safety who can defend large areas downfield. He has good instincts in the passing game as well and does a good job of reading the play and finding the football. He tracks the ball well and has good ball skills to finish the play. Coffey is a good runner who can run down players from behind and keep opponents from scoring. Coffey has the ability to add some weight and get stronger as he matures. Coffey needs to improve his man to man coverage abilities at the next level. Modern offenses challenge safeties to cover more than ever so he will need to get better in this area. JD Coffey will be a traditional safety who can play deep zone or in run support, he should be a starter for a power five team.
