Plays You Don’t Want To Miss: October 3, 2020

A quick run through of the best or worst plays of the weekend. College football gives us something remarkable every week, we are just making sure you don’t miss it. For last week’s videos click here.

How About That For A Two Yard Touchdown?

It goes down as a two yard touchdown but the degree of difficulty on this catch by Devonta Smith is up there. The leaping catch is nice, but the way he tapped his foot then twisted over, so his heel did not hit out of bounds is incredible. We aren’t sure if these guys realize what they are doing at times like these or they are just that good and the instincts take over, but it is amazing to see.

A Fair Catch Signal Only Protects You From The Other Team

The Mountaineers have a seven point lead in the fourth quarter and are receiving a punt with the opportunity to put the game away. The punt returner for West Virginia signals for a fair catch and the Baylor coverage team gets the message. Unfortunately, his teammate did not realize that a fair catch means you don’t hit the returner and he slams into him just before the ball arrives. West Virginia makes a memorable play they would like to forget, and Baylor is back in business.

More Than Just Speed

Clemson’s Travis Etienne is known for his speed and explosiveness. On this play he shows some of the other tools in his toolbox, he breaks a tackle in the backfield, maintains his balance, spins off a second defender while still keeping his feet and balance, then shows us the world class acceleration to beat the third defender to the end-zone. Put this one on the list of “things only a handful of people can do.”

Pin Ball Touchdown

Florida’s KeDarius Toney catches a short crossing route with some room to run. He hits the speed, the Gamecocks defense converges and it appears to be a nice play for Florida, except Toney doesn’t go down, he pin balls off the defenders, seemingly accelerating with each bump and emerges in the clear for a Gators touchdown. For their part, the South Carolina defense did a good job of playing bumpers instead of wrapping up and tackling.

Campbell Lies Down, Literally

Coaches have always told their teams “Don’t lie down!” Down 45 – 7 on Friday night, Campbell went the other way and told their entire offensive line to lie down. The results speak for themselves, the line springs back into action half way through the play and sets up a convoy for their quarterback on the throwback, maybe we have had it wrong all along.

Who Needs Two Hands, When You Have One Good One

Andrew Booth has perfect coverage on this play but Virginia tries the jump ball anyway. Booth leverages the receiver to the sideline, then leaps and twists around to reach for the football, Booth does his best Odell Beckham impression and one hands the interception as he falls to the ground. That’s an excellent display of hands, body control and yoga?

Goodbye

As we finish out this weeks post, Kentucky’s Asim Rose reminds us to make sure you are gone before you say “peace”. In the end Kentucky punched in the touchdown, so the only harm was to Rose’s pride, but a valuable lesson nonetheless. Goodbye till next week.
