MJ Morris: Scouting Report
Size
MJ Morris is a touch smaller than you would like a college quarterback to be. He has average height but has a slimmer build that he will need to fill out at the next level. Morris will need to add strength and bulk to withstand the rigors of the college game. If he doesn’t grow a bit more he will have to be smart and find throwing lanes to avoid balls getting tipped at the line of scrimmage.
Release/Mechanics
Morris has quick feet and a fairly quick release. He does get inconsistent with his footwork and release at times. When his footwork is clean he throws on balance and generates good velocity. When his release is sharp it allows him to throw an accurate ball, he occasionally has a hitch, which makes his release longer and leads to some inconsistency with his accuracy.
Arm
Morris has solid arm strength and can stretch the field. When his footwork and release are clean, he drives the ball downfield with good pace and accuracy. Morris has decent accuracy, especially when he throws with zip, he needs to be more accurate when he takes something off and throws with touch.
Mobility
Morris is an explosive athlete who has the quick twitch ability to make big plays with his feet. He has good speed and can out run defenders, and is very sudden when changing directions. Morris is able to escape the pass rush quickly and turn a negative play into a positive. He is smart running the option and is tough to contain on the edge.
Intangibles
Morris is a poised quarterback who does not panic in the pocket or under duress. He is patient and waits for his plays to develop, hanging in the pocket and taking a hit if needed. Morris is a good runner, but also does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield when on the move. He will only improve as he progresses and learns to go through his progressions faster.
Projection
MJ Morris is a talented prospect who makes game changing plays a thing of habit. Morris is a dangerous runner and also shows the ability to be a proficient passer. His athletic ability and poise will help him become a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
