Kelvin Gilliam: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year we will review the film of some of the top prospects and give you a breakdown of what we see. Today we will dive in and breakdown the tape on Kelvin Gilliam to give you a scouting report based on his film.

Kelvin Gilliam has adequate height and length with a frame that still has plenty of room to fill out. He is already well put together and could grow into a three technique at the next level. Gilliam displays a great first step and very good change of direction skills for a player his size. Against the run he is adept at using his quickness and hands to beat blockers off the line and knifes through gaps to make plays. Plays with great pad level for a recruit and is often the lower man in the trenches. Gilliam shows very good play recognition skills and discipline to avoid falling for ball fakes and find the ball carrier.

As a pass rusher Gilliam displays a very good outside rush and rip move that he often uses to beat tackles at the high school level. He displays the ability to set up his pass rush moves and use his hands. This should allow him to quickly learn additional pass rush moves and set him up for success at the next level. Gilliam displays good closing speed and has the type of motor that is coveted in a defensive player. Kelvin Gilliam should be a strong side defensive end or potentially a three technique in college, that will develop into a multi year starter for an upper half power five program.
