James Williams: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, James Williams committed to Miami, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.

James Williams is a rare athletic specimen at the safety position. Williams is a tall well built prospect who has exceptional size for the position. He has excellent explosion and can close on the football in a hurry. Williams is a very fluid athlete and can change directions like a much smaller player. He has excellent range as a deep safety and can play in a single high scheme or a cover two scheme. He has great ball skills and instincts in coverage, he locates the football, tracks it, then has the size and leaping ability to come down with it. There is no receiver or tight end he cannot compete with for jump balls. He has the speed to run with receivers downfield and has the side to side agility to play in coverage.

Williams also has the ability to play in the box, where he displays the read and react ability to quickly recognize the play combines with the athleticism to go make the play. He explodes through gaps and is disruptive against run plays and when rushing the passer. He can play passing lanes underneath where he can make plays as a robber in coverage. Williams is an overwhelming athlete at the high school level and can impose his will on the game. There are not any real weaknesses in Williams’ game but he will need to fine tune his technique as his athletic advantage will not be so overwhelming in college. Overall, Williams is a rare athlete at the safety position who has few peers physically. James Williams will be a star in college and one of the best safeties in all of college football.
