James BlackStrain: Scouting Report

Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year as players commit to their school of choice we will review their film and give you a breakdown of what we see. Recently, James BlackStrain committed to Georgia Tech, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.

James BlackStrain has good length and a frame that can add good weight. He is a long receiver who plays the ball well in the air. BlackStrain has excellent hands and does a good job of high pointing the ball and plucking it out of the air, over and around defenders. He runs good routes and is very advanced for a high school receiver. He sets his routes up well and accelerates and decelerates well to create separation from the defensive back. BlackStrain is very good at tracking the ball in the air, he also adjusts well to the ball and displays good body control.

BlackStrain does not have great top end speed, but manages to get deep with his good route running ability. He is not a twitchy athlete who is very elusive either, but he is an intelligent runner with the ball in his hands and picks up good yardage by taking good angles and finding the holes in the defense. He was hurt as a junior so we would like to see him play as a senior to see how well he recovered and how much progress he made since his 2018 film. He needs to fill out some but should have no problem adding good weight to his frame. James BlackStrain is a good polished receiver with good size who can hurt the defense in a variety of ways at the collegiate level.
