High School Game Review: St Xavier vs Brownsburg
High school football kicked off this weekend and with several games being televised we were able to get a look at some prospects. Here are our thoughts on the prospects we saw in the St Xavier vs Brownsburg game Saturday.
Top Prospect
Liam Clifford of St Xavier is a 2021 wide receiver who is committed to Penn State. Clifford was excellent from the first offensive play of the game and throughout the contest. He was battling an injury all week and was fighting cramping during the game but was still impactful. On the first offensive drive for St Xavier, Clifford showed his quickness, route running and big play potential on a long pass on a post corner, where he would have scored had his heel not hit out of bounds on a cutback. He didn’t stop there and continued to impress the rest of the game.
Cifford showed good hands and toughness, fighting off defenders to make tough catches. He is a fluid athlete and was able to separate from defenders well and make plays downfield. Clifford was also able to make defenders miss after the catch and pick up extra yardage after the catch as well. Clifford is just a good football player who seems to make big plays almost effortlessly. He showed his speed, athleticism, hands and toughness on Saturday, making him our top prospect of the game.
Committed 2021 Prospects
Joshua Sales is committed to Indiana in the 2021 class and plays left tackle for Brownsburg. He has a good build for a tackle but will need to add strength in college. Sales had a good game Saturday and was very effective as a run blocker, he was able to engage defensive players and drive them off the line of scrimmage or down the line and out of the hole. Brownsburg had success running behind Sales, who was also effective blocking downfield, using his quickness to find and hit second level defenders. Sales did well for the most part in pass protection, though he needs to be more efficient in his sets. Sales should get stronger and develop his technique as he matures, he has a high ceiling and showed his potential on Saturday.
Preston Terrell is a 2021 wide receiver for Brownsburg who is committed to Purdue. He has a good blend of size and speed that makes him a dangerous weapon downfield. Terrell did drop a deep ball early on a go route and was unable to bring in a tough catch on a slant in the third quarter. His speed was evident over the course of the game, and he was open deep often. Terrell tracks the ball well and made a couple of catches deep on go routes in the first half, though he was ruled out of bounds on a tough one (he did drag the foot in-bounds, but there is no review in high school). Terrell had a good punt return as well where he was able to put his speed to work and set up his offense with good field position. Terrell did not have a huge game, but his talent was evident during the game.
Pete Nygra plays offensive tackle for Brownsburg and is committed to Northern Illinois. He will play center in college and has good height and length but needs to add weight. Nygra plays with leverage and is effective as a run blocker. He was able to get push and create lanes on the right side for the Brownsburg running backs. He was solid in pass protection for the most part, though he did struggle with speed on the edge at times. Nygra should continue to get stronger and develop his technique which will make him a solid center in college.
Ben Easters is a 2021 QB prospect on Brownsburg who is committed to Kansas. He has the size and frame of a college quarterback prospect. Easters was up and down in this game but his toughness and resilience stood out. Easters struggled early, though a drop and some miscommunications contributed to those struggles. He has a solid arm and was able to fight through the early struggles to lead his team to a win late. Easters showed his toughness late when he made a big touchdown pass despite getting drilled by a pass rusher. He did throw a late interception, but again bounced back and led his team downfield for a game tying drive. Easters will need to be more consistent with his accuracy and cut out the interceptions going forward, but his leadership and toughness were on display and resulted in a big win for Brownsburg.
2022 Prospects To Watch
Brian Parker of St Xavier is a 2022 center who currently has offers from Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. He had good height and a solid build for a junior with room to fill out more as he matures. Though St Xavier struggled to run the ball in this game, the little success they did have usually came behind Parker. He is strong at the point of attack and was able to generate some push against a good Brownsburg defensive front. He gets to the second level and does a good job finding quicker defenders in space and getting a block on them. In pass protection, Parker was stout on the interior most of the night doing a good job limiting inside pressure. Parker has room to improve and should continue to garner interest from college programs as he develops.
Cameron Collins is a 2022 OL prospect for St Xavier who currently has reported offers from Akron and Toledo. He has decent height and could grow enough to be a college tackle, but will need to fill out quite a bit as he matures. Collins plays left tackle for St Xavier and was solid in pass protection, though he did get beat on a quick counter move to the inside early. As a run blocker Collins needs to continue to get stronger to get more consistent push up front, when he got his pad level low, he was able to move defenders at the line of scrimmage. The talent and athletic ability were evident, but Collins has work to do to reach his potential. If he can continue to improve Collins will be a good offensive line prospect in the 2022 class.
