Georgia 2021 Spring Game: The Players Who Starred

Spring is a beautiful time of year, the weather is warming up, the days get longer and college football teams hold fifteen practices usually culminating with some form of spring game. That spring game is often the first chance fans have to see their team in action. Sure, the rules vary depending on the team, players rotate in and out, and some of the big stars don’t play much, but it’s still the first look at the team. It’s dangerous to read too much into spring game performances, but that won’t stop us from highlighting a few players who impressed in Georgia‘s spring game.

Darnell Washington

Washington is a physically intimidating tight end who appears ready for a bigger role in 2021. Washington’s size alone is impressive, but he is also a good athlete for his size and has impressive ball skills. All of those skills were on display in the spring game, Washington made a long catch early in the game, plowing over a would be tackler along the way. After setting up the offense inside the red zone, Washington made an excellent pin block to seal the edge on the next play for a Kendall Milton touchdown run. He didn’t stop there, Washington continued to win balls over the middle of the field and scored a touchdown of his own later in the game. He finished the game with 4 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown to go with his excellent blocking in the run game.

Adonai Mitchell

The 2020 recruiting class represented itself well in the spring game and Mitchell was one of the players from the class who shined. He has good height and length, and has added good weight to help him win physical match-ups on the outside. Mitchell was the go-to receiver for JT Daniels during the game and made several good catches on the afternoon. Mitchell’s biggest catch was a touchdown at the end of the half on a long pass into the left side of the end zone, Mitchell extended and made an impressive catch for the score. He caught 7 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and showed a good blend of size, speed and hands.

Kendall Milton

Georgia has a deep and talented group of running backs, but during the spring game it was the 2020 recruit, Milton, who stood out. He showed good quickness to find and get through the hole and get to the second level. Milton runs with good balance and has a feel for the position that helps him keep his feet and continue to find open space to run to. He had a good touchdown run early in the game and had several good runs throughout the spring game. He also caught five passes during the game and showed good elusiveness in space. Milton got some run as a true freshman and will be tough to keep off the field in 2021.

Ameer Speed

Speed has excellent size for a cornerback and has waited for his turn to start at cornerback. He is locked in a battle to win a starting spot and had a solid showing during the spring game. Speed is an impressive looking player, with good size and length that fits the mold of an outside cornerback. He used his physicality and length to break up passes and made several tackles during the game. Speed had seven tackles in the game and was credited with two pass breakups in coverage. He had good coverage throughout the game and did nothing to hurt his chances to win a starting spot.

Brock Bowers

Bowers is a true freshman who enrolled early and is making a good impression early in his career. He’s not nearly as massive as Washington, but Bowers has good size for a young tight end and has excellent athleticism. He made a few good plays over the middle of the field, showing the ability to stretch the seams of the defense and make tough contested catches to help his quarterback. The true freshman finished the game with three catches for 39 yards and looked like a player who would have a role early in his career.
