Fresh Performance: TreVeyon Henderson

With Ohio State‘s offense stuck in neutral and a defense that has struggled of late the Buckeyes needed a boost on Saturday. True freshman, TreVeyon Henderson has flashed in the first two games of the season, but made the most of his first start and carried the Buckeyes to the win. Ohio State needed Henderson to be a star to separate from Tulsa and the explosive running back delivered in a 41 – 20 win.

Henderson ran strong between the tackles, keeping the Ohio State offense on schedule while making big runs whenever he could breakthrough to the second level. As the game wore on, Henderson began to impose his will on the game. He showed off his burst, elusiveness and strength on a key touchdown early in the third quarter. Ohio State held a 13 – 6 lead and had just crossed midfield. Henderson found a hole on the right side and shot through it with a burst of speed, evaded the safety with a fake to the outside and cut back in then powered through two tacklers to finish the long run with a touchdown.

Henderson continued to dominate the second half, using his speed and acceleration to break off long runs for an otherwise stagnant offense. He would come through with another key play to end the third quarter. With the third quarter winding down, the Buckeyes were just shy of the 50 yard line with 1st and 10 and a 20 -13 lead. Henderson took the hand-off to the left and cut it back to the right side to find the hole, he then weaved back to the left side of the field, made a defender miss and out ran the rest of the defense for his third touchdown to stretch the lead to two scores again.

TreVeyon Henderson finished the game with 24 carries for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns. The emerging star set a freshman rushing record for Ohio State while leading his team to a bounce back victory. Henderson was a top recruit in the 2021 class and was expected to have a big impact as a freshman, but a record breaking performance in his third game is exceeding all expectations. He has established himself as the best running back on Ohio State’s roster and has earned plenty more opportunities in 2021.
