CJ Williams: Scouting Report
Size
CJ Williams has good height for the receiver position and can create match-up problems for defensive backs. He has long arms and a good frame to continue to bulk up and get stronger as he matures. Williams has close to ideal measurables for a receiver and will have no problem playing on the outside.
Athleticism
Williams is not a burner, but he has enough speed to challenge the defense vertically. He is a smooth athlete who plays with great balance and is often moving faster than it appears. He is sharp in and out of his cuts and accelerates up to top speed fairly quickly to get past defenders. Williams is a good all around athlete who can hurt the defense in a variety of ways.
Route Running
Williams is an advanced receiver who shows plenty of polish for a high school prospect. He is effective setting up his routes and shows good pace through his routes to create separation out of his breaks. Williams is a savvy receiver who understands how to beat man coverage and how to settle into the windows in a zone defense. He gets open effectively and helps make easier decisions for his quarterback.
Ball Skills
Williams has good ball skills that show up in jump ball situations and on the sideline in tight windows. He has a large catch radius and good body control to adjust to the ball, secure the catch and get his feet down in bounds. Williams is very natural catching the ball, with soft hands and the ability to pluck the ball out of the air. He is effective catching the ball in all situations and is a reliable target in the passing game.
Run After Catch
Williams is solid after the catch, but could stand to improve his elusiveness with the ball in his hands. His athleticism helps him pick up yardage after the catch because he is able to pull away from defenders. As he gets stronger, Williams will be tough for defensive backs to tackle in space, which will add to his run after catch ability.
Projection
CJ Williams is a smooth athlete who has a good size/speed combo for the position. He is a sure handed receiver who runs good routes to create easy separation. With a well-rounded game, Williams will develop into an all conference type performer in college.
