Aaron McLaughlin: Scouting Report
Recruiting is the life blood of a college football program. Every player added to the program is a new piece of the puzzle. It’s impossible to follow college football and ignore recruiting entirely. Throughout the year we will review the film of some of the top prospects and give you a breakdown of what we see. Last month, Aaron McLaughlin committed to NC State, today we will dive in and breakdown the tape to give you a quick scouting report based on his film.
Aaron McLaughlin is a big, strong quarterback who is physically ready to play college football now. He has the ideal height, frame and strength for the quarterback position. McLaughlin is not a statue or a big guy who labors to move around, he is actually a good runner with speed and balance when on the move. He does a good job of throwing from unconventional platforms on the run, maintaining his balance and arm strength to rip off strong throws. He is also capable of using his speed to make big gains in the running game and is able to run through arm tackles to pick up extra yardage.
While in the pocket, McLaughlin displays good arm strength and can make all the throws needed at the next level. He stands in the pocket and scans the field well to find his receivers. McLaughlin is a tough player who is not afraid to take a hit while delivering the football. He does need to become a more consistent passer, as his release is not clean and his footwork is inconsistent. This causes him to be erratic with his accuracy at times. Mechanics are coachable but the clay to mold here is impressive. Aaron Mclaughlin has the build and ability of a power five starting quarterback right now and should be a multi year starter in college with some upside.
