Xavier Nwankpa: Scouting Report
Size
Xavier Nwankpa is a tall safety with long arms and an excellent frame for the position. He has continued to get stronger year to year, but still has room to add good weight. He has long arms and as he fills out, he could play multiple spots at the second level. Nwankpa can play anywhere from a hybrid linebacker/nickel to a deep safety spot effectively.
Athleticism
Nwankpa has rare athleticism for a player with his size and frame. He shows excellent burst and gets downhill quickly on plays in front of him. He also has the speed to cover ground downfield and the change of direction ability to be effective in man coverage. Nwankpa is an excellent athlete who has is able to play in a variety of roles for the defense.
Coverage Skills
Nwankpa has a good feel for the offensive play development in coverage and reacts quickly to the ball. He is able to cover a lot of ground in zone coverage and anticipates throws well. Nwankpa shows the ability to play man coverage against receivers and tight ends, where his length is a big asset. He does need to improve his technique when playing man, particularly against quicker receivers.
Ball Skills
Nwankpa has good instincts at safety and reacts quickly to the football. He tracks the ball well and has the long arms to make plays on 50/50 balls. Nwankpa catches the ball well, displaying the ability to make tough interceptions and beat the offensive player for the football. His ball skills help him create big plays for the defense consistently.
Run Support / Tackling
Nwankpa is a big hitter who tackles through the ball carrier or receiver. He is not only effective getting players down, but also sets a tone for the defense with his physicality. Nwankpa is quick to the football and uses his athleticism and length well to beat blocks and make plays against the run game.
Projection
Xavier Nwankpa has a rare blend of size and athleticism for the safety position. He is a versatile defender who can be a star against the run and pass at the second level of the defense. He has all of the tools to be a star and will develop into one of the best safeties in college football.
