WR Rankings: Marvin Mims

As we review the WR rankings, players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Marvin Mims, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

• Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
• Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
• We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Oklahoma wide receiver, Marvin Mims burst on the scene as a true freshman in 2020 and continued to be a big play weapon during his sophomore season in 2021. Despite an in-season quarterback change, he was able to average over 22 yards per catch. Mims led the team with 705 receiving yards on 32 catches and five touchdowns. He is a big play threat who can get behind the defense at any time making him one of the most dangerous wide receivers in college football.

Mims has an innate ability to get open downfield. He has good speed and quickness that helps him to take advantage of the pockets in the coverage. Mims has a good understanding of coverage, recognizing where the open space is and exploiting it. He is able to pull away from defenders and find the open space, giving his quarterback an easy target downfield. Mims tracks the ball very well, making the most of his downfield opportunities. He is an exceptional big play threat who can strike at any time from any distance.

Mims plays bigger than his 5’11” 177 lb frame. He utilizes good body positioning to shield the play from defenders and accelerates through the catch, making it tough for defenders to make a play on the ball. Mims has the toughness to fight through contact to get to the football and displays the concentration and leaping ability to make difficult catches. These plays make it easy for the quarterback to trust him even in coverage, knowing Mims will likely win the ball.

Marvin Mims is a proven deep threat who can make a game changing play at any time. He has the speed, instincts and ball skills to put consistent pressure on the defense. Mims is a reliable target in the intermediate passing game as well, but thrives in the vertical passing game. He is a big-play machine that has become one of the top receivers in college football.
