Will Johnson: Scouting Report
Size
Will Johnson is a big cornerback who has rare size at the position. He is a tall prospect that has already filled out well. Johnson has the build to become a safety, but is a capable corner as well. Johnson’s size and physicality are tough for most receivers to deal with and will be an asset in college.
Athleticism
Johnson has good speed and burst for his size. He has the ability to run down plays from behind and to track receivers downfield. Johnson shows the ability to start and stop effectively and has the lateral quickness needed to play cornerback. Johnson has the athleticism to stay at cornerback, but could grow into an excellent cover safety.
Hips/Technique
Johnson is surprisingly fluid in coverage. He has the flexibility to play man coverage, but will need to maintain that as he gets bigger. He has good technique in coverage, showing the ability to press receivers at the line and redirect them effectively. Johnson also has a good feel for zone coverage, wasting little motion and reacting well to the play.
Ball Skills
Johnson is an effective receiver in high school as well and is very comfortable tracking the football. He shows good body control and has the ability to adjust to the ball once he locates it. He is a good athlete and has the good leaping ability to win jump balls. With his size, leaping ability and ball skills, Johnson is an asset in contested catch situations.
Physicality/Tackling
Johnson is an imposing presence on the perimeter. He has the ability to neutralize receivers at the line of scrimmage and can eliminate them from the play when he gets his hands on them. He is an aggressive and physical player who will deliver a hit in run support and can fight off blocks on the edge.
Projection
Will Johnson is a physically impressive prospect that has the tools to play cornerback or safety in college. He has strong coverage skills and good feet that will help him develop into an all conference type performer in college.
