Walker Howard: Scouting Report
Size
Walker Howard is on the smaller side for a college quarterback. He has average height and a lean frame that should fill out some. Howard needs to pack on some good weight at the next level to withstand the rigors of college football. He has done a good job of making plays from the pocket during his career and understands how to find throwing lanes.
Release/Mechanics
Howard has an efficient release that allows him to get on top of the ball and drive it to his target. His footwork is still a work in progress and needs to be more consistent, particularly under duress. He does a good job of repeating his release on the move, but needs to do a better job of staying on balance to generate power with his lower half.
Arm
Howard has a good arm and can make all of the throws a college quarterback is asked to make. He generates good velocity with his arm when on the move and sometimes without using his lower half as much as he could. Howard has excellent accuracy, delivering on target throws in traffic, whether throwing with velocity or with touch.
Mobility
Howard shows good mobility and speed in the open field. He has quick feet and is able to escape the pass rush and buy time to throw or can run for big gains. Once he decides to run, he has the speed and burst to make a big play. Howard may not be a true dual threat quarterback, but he is a threat in the run game and will need to be accounted for.
Intangibles
Howard plays with more polish than his level of starting experience would indicate. He has a good feel for the offense, understands where his receivers will be and gets his eyes downfield when scrambling. Howard has a lot of confidence in his arm and accuracy to fit the ball in a tight window, though this does lead to some questionable decisions at times.
Projection
Walker Howard is a high ceiling quarterback prospect who has a diverse skill set. He has good arm strength, good mobility and a natural feel for the position. Howard has the tools and nature to develop into an excellent quarterback who will be an all conference type performer.
