True Freshmen Mountain 2020: September 23 Update

The True Freshmen Mountain is our way of tracking the impact college football’s newcomers are having. It’s like the game, King of the Mountain, the player on the top is King, and everyone else is doing their best to knock him off the peak. We will update the list every week adding in the performances from that week. The mountain is based on a players performance for the season. We are judging players based on their production, the level of competition they performed against and the eye test. To see last week’s true freshmen mountain click here.

King Of The Mountain

Myles Murphy – Clemson

Season Stats: 9 tackles 5 TFL 2 Sacks

Murphy added two more tackles for loss to bring his tally to five for the season. He also forced a fumble against The Citadel while playing only 16 snaps in the game due to the blowout. He has been disruptive in the backfield in both of Clemson’s games so far and is showing he can dominate against lesser competition. You can only play who is on your schedule and Murphy will get the opportunity to shine against better opponents in the near future.

Top Challengers

Jaylan Knighton – Miami

Stats: 13 car 68 yds 1 TD / 1 rec 75 yds 1 TD

Knighton did not get as many carries in game two as he did in the opener and only ran for nine yards though he did pickup his first rushing touchdown on a short run. The highlight of his night came on a wheel route where he slipped past the defense, made the catch, and sped off 75 yards for the score. Knighton has shown glimpses of his potential as a runner and receiver in the first two games of the season and we can’t wait to watch him develop over the course of the year.

Jahmyr GibbsGeorgia Tech

Stats: 15 car 66 yds 1 TD / 4 rec 60 yds 1 TD / 2 kr 93 yds

Gibbs made his much awaited debut for the Yellow Jackets this past weekend and did not disappoint. He opened the game with a 75 yard kickoff return that set up the first Georgia Tech score. He showed quickness and elusiveness running the ball and displayed good skill as a receiver as well. Georgia Tech lost big, but Gibbs was able to run a touchdown and catch a touchdown while picking up over 60 yards each, rushing and receiving. He is a promising player who will continue to shine as the season progresses.

Climbing Towards The Top

Chris Tyree – Notre Dame

Stats: 14 car 85 yds 1 TD / 5 KR 104 yds

Tyree got his feet wet in the season opener but did not make a splash. He did get comfortable with the offense and had a big day in his second game with the Irish. Tyree got 8 carries against South Florida for 65 yards and scored his first touchdown. He is an explosive athlete with excellent quickness who appears to be shot out of a cannon when he accelerates. With his big play ability, we expect Tyree to continue to have a role in the Notre Dame backfield.

Jordan Addison – Pittsburgh

Stats: 14 rec 92 yds 1 TD / 4 car 39 yds

Pittsburgh has targeted Addison quite a bit early in the season. He has already accumulated 14 catches on the season, but most of them have not gone for much yardage. He was more effective downfield in his second game, picking up 57 yards and his first receiving touchdown, to go with 24 rushing yards on 3 carries. Addison is a weapon the Pittsburgh offense intends to utilize quite a bit this season, we expect to see him continue to make plays.

Seth McGowan – Oklahoma

Stats: 9 car 61 yds 1 TD / 1 rec 37 yds 1 TD

Oklahoma had a bye this week. But McGowan remains here on the list after a strong performance in the season opener. He should get more opportunities to impress against Kansas State this weekend.

Also On The Mountain

Shane Illingworth (QB) – Oklahoma State: 4/5 79 yards / 1 carry -3 yards

Defense

Bryan Bresee (DT) – Clemson: 4 Tak .5 TFL .5 Sack 1 PBU 1 Blk

DeMonte Capehart (DT) – Clemson: 3 Tak 2 TFL 1 Sack

Dayon Hayes (DE) – Pittsburgh: 2 Tak 2 TFL 2 Sack 1 FF

Kenneth Harris (CB) – Arkansas State: 1 tackle 2 pass breakups

With a limited number of teams in action the crop of players to choose from is still somewhat limited. As more freshman begin to see action with the SEC starting their season this weekend, the number of true freshman having an impact will increase. We will update the true freshman mountain weekly to update the rankings as the season moves forward.
