True Freshmen Mountain 2020: November 11 Update

The True Freshmen Mountain is our way of tracking the impact college football’s newcomers are having. It’s like the game, King of the Mountain, the player on the top is King, and everyone else is doing their best to knock him off the peak. We will update the list every week adding in the performances from that week. The mountain is based on a players performance for the season. We are judging players based on their production, the level of competition they performed against and the eye test. To see last week’s true freshmen mountain click here.

King Of The Mountain

Malachi Moore – Alabama

Stats: 28 Tak 3 TFL 6 PBU 2 Int 1 FF 1 FR 1 TD

Moore has been a perfect fit at the star position for Alabama, making big plays on a weekly basis and surging to the top of this list. In his last game Moore made 8 tackles with 1 tackle for loss and had 2 pass breakups as well. Moore has filled the stat sheet in different columns every week and has climbed this list with his big play ability and consistent play.

Top Challengers

Myles Murphy – Clemson

Season Stats: 27 tackles 8.5 TFL 3.5 Sacks 2 fumble forced, 1 QB Hurry

Murphy has slowed down some after his torrid start to the season, but remains one of the most impactful true freshmen in college football. Against Notre Dame the defensive end recorded just one tackle but it was a tackles for loss and he also had a quarterback hurry to his credit. Murphy started fast and remains near the top of the mountain but will need to get back to making more plays to regain his spot at the top.

Tank BigsbyAuburn

Stats: 89 car 503 yds 5 TD / 11 rec 84 yds / 13 KR 306 yds

Bigsby saw his streak of 100 yard rushing games come to an end against LSU. He was still very productive, running for 71 yards on 15 carries with 2 touchdowns in the game. Tank has been impressive this season, already getting more than halfway to 1,000 yards on the season. His punishing running style and instincts should help him continue his impressive first season at Auburn.

Closing In On The Top Group

DJ Uiagalelei – Clemson

Stats: 71/104 883 yds 4 TD 0 Int / 27 car 59 yds 4 TD

With Trevor Lawrence sidelined the last two weeks due to Covid, Uiagalelei was given the opportunity to start. He performed well, leading a comeback to win against Boston College, then throwing for over 400 yards and 2 TD in an overtime loss to Notre Dame. With Lawrence back it may be difficult for Uiagalelei to continue to climb higher, but he has shown Clemson fans the future is bright behind center.

Jordan Addison – Pittsburgh

Stats: 52 rec 611 yds 3 TD / 7 Car 53 yds / 2 PR 15 yds / 2 KR 39 yds

The Panthers had their best offensive performance of the season against Florida State and Addison was a big part of it. He made 11 catches for 127 yards and ran twice for another 10 yards. Addison has been the go-to receiver for Pittsburgh catching at least 7 passes in six of eight games this season. His consistency and big play ability have been a bright spot for the Panthers’ offense.

Deuce VaughnKansas State

Stats: 87 car 371 yds 4 TD / 16 rec 366 yds 1 TD

Kansas State has lost the last two games, in both games Vaughn was held in check and the Wildcats did not have anywhere else to turn. The defenses were focused on Vaughn and have limited him to 62 rushing yards and 6 receiving yards the last two games. He is a versatile player who should be able to find ways to contribute despite the extra attention. The Wildcats coaching staff will have find creative ways to get him the ball.

On The Slope

Eli RicksLSU

Stats: 11 tak .5 TFL 2 PBU 3 Int 1 TD

LSU has struggled this season, but Ricks has been a bright spot in the secondary. Ricks has been excellent in coverage and has proven he can be an asset is run support as well. 2020 has not gone the way LSU wanted, but knowing they have another top corner in the secondary going forward makes getting back on track that much easier.

Marvin Mims – Oklahoma

Stats: 25 catches 418 yds 7 TD / 1 car 17 yds / 8 pr 143 yds

Mims has been a touchdown machine for Oklahoma this season, leading the team with seven scores in as many games. With Jadon Haselwood returning it will be interesting to see if Mims sees less targets, or if the attention shifting to Haselwood will actually create chances for Mims.

Peter Skoronski – Northwestern

Stats: 3 starts at Left Tackle

Skoronski is starting at left tackle for the 3 – 0 Wildcats. He was a highly touted recruit many expected to play on the interior but early in his career he has excelled at tackle. Skoronski has been effective as a pass blocker and as a run blocker for Northwestern, showing the ability to handle pass rushers and push defenders off the ball in the running game.
