Texas A&M Aggies: True Freshmen To Watch in 2020
Every February (and now December) college football teams sign a new class of football players to join their program. It’s exciting to dream about what a prospect can become in the future but come September, some of those freshman will redshirt and wait for their opportunity to shine, while a few will be given the chance to make an immediate impact this season. In this series we will take a team by team look at the true freshman who could be given the opportunity to make a name for themselves in 2020. Today we will look at the Texas A&M Aggies true freshmen to watch in 2020.
Demond Demas – WR
The Aggies leading receiver in 2019 was Jhamon Ausbon and he returns for the 2020 season. They do however lose Quartney Davis and Kendrick Rogers who were the second and fourth leading receivers on the team. Ainias Smith and Camron Buckley got some playing time last year and both had some success but they are not guaranteed to be the starters this season. There is playing time to be had at receiver and the Aggies will need players to rise to the occasion. Demas is a rare talent who is a physical freak and will be ready to contribute quickly. He has tools that few players in the country possess and will be difficult to keep off the field.
Demond Demas did not play his senior year of high school after he was ruled ineligible. That was unfortunate because he is a joy to watch on the football field. Demas has an excellent combination of size and speed. He can beat the defense deep or turn plays underneath into long gains. Demas is a great receiver on jump balls where he can utilize his leaping ability and body control to win against most defenders. Demas needs to become a better route runner to reach his full potential but he is ready to play immediately. His physical talents will get him on the field and we believe he will be one of the Aggies top three receivers this season.
Jaylon Jones – DB
Elijah Blades and Myles Jones played a lot at cornerback for the Agges last season and will both be the clubhouse leaders to start at corner this year. Devin Morris also emerged last year and got playing time as a nickelback. He should have the chance to contribute in the same role in 2020. After those three the Aggies will need players to step up and provide quality depth in the secondary. There is a need for talented and versatile defensive backs in college football due to the way modern offenses attack the defense. Jaylon Jones has a good chance to contribute as a multi-talented defensive back who can play multiple spots in the secondary.
Jaylon Jones is a long athlete with explosive athleticism in the secondary. Jones has the top end speed and short area quickness of a cornerback but also has the size and strength needed to play safety. He has excellent leaping ability and ball skills and can take on bigger receivers. Jones has very few limitations in the defensive backfield making him an ideal defensive back in the modern game. He is not a finished product as he is still very raw but the athletic ability alone will give him a chance to play immediately. Jones provides depth at multiple spots right away but has the ability to earn more playing time as the season progresses and possibly unseat one of the current starters.
Devon Achane – RB
The transfer portal is filled to the brim with Texas A&M running backs. Jashaun Corbin and Deneric Prince have already found new schools, while Cordarrian Richardson Jacob Kibodi and Nigel Brobbey are still looking for a new team. Fortunately the team does return star freshman Isaiah Spiller (#25 RB on our list) who should blossom in his second year. The depth in 2020 will have to come from new players in the running back room because there is little to no returning depth. The Aggies brought in four running backs in the 2020 recruiting class and all four of those players will have the opportunity to earn carries in the backfield.
Devon Achane was the Touchdown Club of Houston Offensive Player of the Year in 2020 while playing at Fort Bend Marshall High School in Texas. Achane in not a big player but is explosive in the open field. He has excellent speed and acceleration and can make big plays out of nothing. Achane is a good receiver and will be an asset in the passing game as well. He may play more of a hybrid role as a receiver and running back for the Aggies but right now the major need will be at running back. Achane enrolled early and has a head start on his college career and should get reps for the Aggies this year. He will be in the mix to get touches as a running back and as a pass catcher in 2020.
