Sam Horn: Scouting Report
Size
Sam Horn has excellent height for a college quarterback. He will need to add weight to his frame, but has plenty of room to get bigger as he matures. Expect Horn to reach close to prototypical size for a pocket passer. He will have no trouble scanning the field and making throws from the pocket.
Release/Mechanics
Horn has a solid release and gets on top of the ball with his over the top motion. He does have a bit of a windup and could stand to speed up his release some. Horn has good feet and does a good job generating power with his lower half and throwing with good balance. He also resets his feet effectively on the move.
Arm
Horn possesses good arm strength and can attack all levels of the football field. He is able to throw the ball with zip underneath and drives the ball downfield. Horn has above average accuracy and generally does a good job with his ball placement. He throws with good touch when needed and understands when to take something off the pass.
Mobility
Horn is a pocket passer but has good feet and is able to navigate the pocket effectively. He slides up and around the pocket efficiently and is able to escape and extend plays. Horn is an effective runner and can pick up a key first down when nothing is open downfield. He is an effective scrambler who can hurt the defense if they ignore his running ability.
Intangibles
Horn plays with confidence and trusts his talent to make tough plays. He still has to be quicker going through his progressions and find the easier throws when they are available. He does not quit on plays and keeps his eyes downfield when on the move to find open receivers. Horn has shown he is a competitor who will attempt to will his team to victory whenever possible.
Projection
Sam Horn has most of the traits needed to be a good college quarterback. He has the arm strength, accuracy and footwork needed to thrive at the position. Horn’s skill set and competitive nature will allow him to develop into a good quarterback who can be a starter for an upper echelon power five team.
