S Rankings: Tyler Nubin

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Tyler Nubin, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

You can view the College Football S rankings here.

Minnesota safety, Tyler Nubin has come into his own during the 2021 season. He was a highly touted recruit who earned a starting spot in 2020 and looks like he is comfortable being a leader for the defense this year. Nubin has accounted for 21 tackles, 1 pass breakup and 2 interceptions from his safety spot. He is the last line of defense for the Minnesota secondary and has held up very well in that regard.

At 6’2″ 210 lbs, Nubin fits the mold of an imposing safety. He is a presence on the back line of the defense and is a strong tackler who will deliver a big hit to the offensive player. Nubin takes good angles to the football and is a sure tackler in space, keeping offenses from making big plays. He is able to fight off blockers and make plays in the screen game or against the run. Nubin not only looks the part of an intimidating safety, he plays the part effectively as well.

Nubin is a versatile player who does many things well to help his defense. He is a rangy athlete who covers plenty of ground when he plays over the top. Nubin has cover skills and is able to play receivers man to man when needed. He is equally adept playing the run and the pass, making it difficult for offenses to scheme ways to pick on him. That versatility makes him one of the most complete safeties in the country.

Tyler Nubin has shown a better understanding of his role in the defense and is comfortable as a leader for the Gophers’ defense. He is a good athlete who is a bit of a swiss army knife at the safety spot for Minnesota. Nubin can do it all and has no real weaknesses in his game, making him a player who has to be on the field all game. He is making the most of those opportunities and becoming a top safety in college football.
