RB Rankings: Nicholas Singleton

As we review the RB rankings, players have had a chance to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Nicholas Singleton, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Penn State running back, Nicholas Singleton has been a key contributor early in his true freshman season for the Nittany Lions. He has already had two 100 yard games this season, including a 124 yard outing at Auburn. In six games, Singleton leads Penn State with 482 yards and 5 touchdowns on 69 carries while also catching 3 passes for 11 yards. Singleton arrived in Happy Valley with great expectations and has lived up to them thus far in his career.

Singleton has excellent speed in the open field. It’s particularly surprising given his powerful 6’0″ 219 lb frame. He accelerates like he is shot out of a cannon, breaking through to the second level of the defense in the blink of an eye. Once he is in the open field, Singleton regularly outruns defenders’ angles and makes explosive plays for the offense. His burst and speed make him tough to keep contained when he is able to find a lane to run through.

While the speed may be surprising for his size, Singleton’s power and the violence he runs with are exactly what you would expect from a player with his strong build. He does not hesitate to take on tacklers, delivering blows to defenders. Singleton is able to run through tackles or drive the pile for extra yardage on contact. His powerful running wears down the defense, softening them up as the game progresses and creating bigger plays later in the game. This unique blend of power and speed makes Singleton a nightmare for defenses to keep under wraps.

Nicholas Singleton has an ideal blend of speed and size for a running back. He is a powerful runner that can drive through tacklers, but also has the speed to run away from everyone on the football field. Still a true freshman, Singleton has plenty of room to improve his game, but he is already an impact player for Penn State. He has elite physical traits that will help him become a great running back in the near future.
