QB Rankings: Tyler Van Dyke

Updated: 01/19/2022

With the season underway players have had the opportunity to raise their stock and move up the rankings. Before we jump into Tyler Van Dyke, here’s a few reminders about the rankings themselves:

  • The rankings will be updated throughout the season.
  • Players who have not played college football are not eligible for the rankings.
  • Players are graded on their college ability, not their pro potential.
  • We are judging players on their film, production and physical tools.

Miami quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke was forced into action when D’Eriq King went out with an injury. He took a little time to settle in but began to put it together in the NC State game. Van Dyke has been on a roll since that game, and has now completed 62.3 percent of his passes and averages 9 yards per attempt with 25 touchdowns against 6 interceptions in ten total games played. While there may be some rebuilding ahead for the Miami program, Van Dyke showed that the quarterback position will be in good hands.

Van Dyke has a strong arm that allows him to push the ball downfield and squeeze it into tight windows. He is able to make tough throws when on the move or off balance because of his arm strength. Van Dyke throws a good deep ball, stretching the field vertically and allowing his receivers to make big plays downfield. He can also fire the ball into tight coverage underneath and muscle it past defenders to get it to the receiver. His arm will play up even more as his footwork and mechanics improve, but it’s already good enough to put pressure on any pass defense.

In addition to that arm strength, Van Dyke has the competitive edge that is needed to be a great leader. He is a tough quarterback who will deliver an accurate pass while taking a shot. Van Dyke is not the type to clam up when things are not going well, regardless of the score, situation or if he has made mistakes earlier in the game he will keep firing. That competitive spirit helps him overcome bad plays and rubs off on his teammates who believe their quarterback can get them back in the game. It’s apparent that Van Dyke is a fighter who will keep coming back for four quarters.

Tyler Van Dyke is a first year starter, but he has proven he can make plays and carry his team to a win. He has an excellent arm and will only get better as he cleans up his footwork and mechanics. The expectation was not for Van Dyke to be the starter in 2021, but he has grown into that role and as he develops, he will become a star that can lead his team into the future. Van Dyke will be counted on to lead the Miami offense in 2022, it looks like he will be up to the task.
